Marvelous! It works like a charm really, had no problems installing it and it connected on the spot. Running Snow Leopard on a last gen MacMini and have tried flawless connections from both last gen Ipod Touch as well as my Ipad :) Have only been using it for a hours or so but so far so good. Only problems (which are minor since it’s working great so far) is the play/pause-controls which – as you’ve already stated – are messed up. But then again, this is no surprise since you were very clear about that in the post, and as far as I’m concerned it’s a minor flaw (working as a developer myself I tend to focus on core functionality rather than the bling bling at these early stages).

Great work guys! Hope Guns’n'Roses was great and you had a blast at your sisters wedding =) Looking forward to future updates, but gotta say, I’m real happy as it is at the moment.

    Cheers,
    Johan

Nice! But is it posible to see my playlists?

No, not available from Spotify yet. (maybe we add support for premium users later…) You can import playlists and star them from the remote, but you cant browse them. We hope Spotify will open up on this…

Hi everybody! The beta has been out for 24 hours, and we got about 55 people testing it for us this first day. We got some cover-art trouble, but except for that it seems to work for most people. This is great news! Please tell us if its not working :-)

I got no functional problem at all, except what you mention.

    add screenrotation in future releases
Starting spotify works from the remote. (maybe updated?)
It works on ipad and iphone at the same time :-) Is that good or bad? Maybe a settings page?

    Heja Norge!

      1. Play all does not work unless manual start.
      2. Often the search hangs, and you loose contact with helper. Only restart helps.
      3. Spotify crashes sometimes probably because of nr 2 above.

        June 12, 2010 8:11 pm

Please send remotelessdebug.txt (it should be in your hard drive) to anders@remoteless.no after you had a crash or something did not work.

I just discovered that updating flash removed some Spotify errors, the search does not go trough Spotify, so that should not be a problem.

The play/pause, next and previous buttons do not work for me, perhaps because I am using the Spanish version of Spotify?

Could you do this for us?: Start spotify, right click on the spotify-dock icon so that you see the menu, and then take a screenshot, or tell us what it contains? Had no idea that Spotify was localised. Please send this to anders@remoteless.no

No album art for me on Mac though works on Windows. Bit erratic in terms of search and favourites, sometimes brings up tracks, sometimes searches without success.

But great to be on Mac!

Having deleted Remoteless from iPod Touch and iTunes, and erased all settings, I then re-downloaded and re-installed it. Cover art is now there!

However, still problems with searches/favourites. e.g. when I search for U2 albums, I can get track listings for U218 Singles but not for any of their other albums! Does anyone else experience problems like this?

      • aoredsson permalink*
        June 12, 2010 8:08 pm

Hi, when you search you basically do a string search (that is all spotify alows), so if you search for U2, you will get songs albums and artists with U2 in the name. However, artists are listed first, so if you click on U2-artist, you get all the albums. Sorry if this was not clear, and great the cover-art is working!

    Beta news 12.6.2010:

Thanks a lot for all your feedback!

We have tracked down a lot of stuff, and made some improvements. I have a list of bugs to fix before next update is released, but that should not take to long. Please continue to send descriptions + remotelessdebug.txt + screenshots to anders@remoteless.no

Currently there are about 120 users testing our beta, and that is great!

Hi, this means that remoteless cant find spotify (and the SIMBL plugin), but the client and the helper are talking without trouble. I’m going to add some diagnostic in next beta, so that its simpler to check these things.

If you enter the following into Terminal.app
defaults write net.culater.SIMBL SIMBLLogLevel -int 0

and then Starts Spotify, there should be some error messages in Console.app from SIMBL if the plugin did not load. Also notice that Leopard require a special SIMBL version. My girlfriend has a leopard machine, so I’m going to do a lot of testing on it before next beta update. Seems like Leopard users have more trouble (which isn’t that strange since I’m developing on snow leopard)

Maybe its time to upgrade? :-)

thanks, that did the trick, seems to be working alright. did some testing and all the points stated are true, couldn’t find any others, so that’s positive. but the start spotify from remote works every time! only the volume slider and buttons don’t work. but that must be the leopard problem. thanks for all the effort though, this is gonna turn out a real must!

Just leave my laptop plugged in to my amplifier and away i go,

Will this work on the older Mac Mini(Power PC) running OSX Tiger 10.4?

I got as far as “Install RemotelessHelperOSX” but it tells me it is not compatible with my version of OSX when I try put it in my applications folder.

New to Mac so may be doing something wrong :-)

We have lowered required os to 10.4 in our development build, but we have not tested if these things worked in 10.4. Next beta update will contain these fixes, so then we will know :-)

    Hi!

I’ve been trying out remoteless on my mac mini and ipod touch now for a couple of days and I loving it! This it the remote I’ve been looking for!

But, I just discovered that the album art is only displayed if the spotify window is open, i.e if I minimize the window the album art disappears. Also, if I change the size of the album art in spotify the resolution changes in remoteless. Now that I know this it is not such a big thing, but I was wondering if that is how it’s meant to work?

    Thanks
    Oscar

    Hi,

    Great app you have there!

First I was a bit annoyed by some inconsistent behaviour, but then I realized that Spotify needs to be open (so not minimized or hidden). That improved things. But not always.

I have an iMac and my display is set to sleep after 10 minutes. Once the display is asleep, trying to ‘play all’ from an album does not work. (strangely playing one track does work). This action will actually bring the display on, but since my iMac is protected with password, a logon screen appears. When I disable password after display sleep, it works. But obviously, I would like to keep my iMac password protected, so it would be great if this could be solved in a future version.

And of course I have plenty of feature requests (like being able to star), but I’ll post them on the support forum.

    Hey!
First things first, i am very excited about this program, and hope it turns out well.
Second thing is that i cant get it to work = (

I am running Leopard and downloaded the wrong SIMPL version at first. So i uninstalled it and installed the new one and then draged the plugin to the right folder.
Everything seems right, the greenbox in the menu bar seems to say its connected.
Though when i start the application all the buttons are grey, i cant press anything and nothing happends (although it seems to be connected to my mac). Any idés?

    • Hugo bokhorst permalink
      July 14, 2010 2:18 pm

did you uninstall the previous SIMBL version first? i had the same problem, and solved it by uninstalling the first (newer SIMBL) and then installed the older version.

  20. July 11, 2010 9:17 pm

It seems to be working fine for me. I am, however, getting very many of these messages in console:
    Broadcaster.cpp:94:select
    ConnectionManager.cpp:205:select error timeout
    ConnectionManager.cpp:196:select
Somewhere over 50 times, every 2 or 3 minutes!

    • aoredsson permalink*
      July 23, 2010 11:11 pm

Ill look into it, did not know that our log messages ended up in the console :-) I think its normal behavior, but then I don’t need to log it all the time.

  21. Kris permalink
    July 23, 2010 10:32 pm

ok, here is a maybe fairly technical one.
It seems the helper application keeps a connection established on port 9877, even if you have shut down the remoteless app on the ipod touch, or even when the ipod has been shut down completely.
It would be much cleaner to close the connection after a time of inactivity.

Now I’m running a script every 15 minutes to check if it can put my computer in standby. Checking for open network connections is one of the checks I do. So after having connected with remoteless once, the network connection keeps open and my computer stays awake….

      July 23, 2010 11:12 pm

Wow, great feedback! I guess you don’t count listening sockets, so Ill look at the “detect closed connections” code to verify that i really detect closed connections. Thanks, would not have found this.

    Thanks everybody for great feedback.

I’m 100% committed to mac-beta-2 right now (after some weeks with vacation), so v2.0 should be out in a week or two.

The next update will contain some major updates:
#1: All functionality (including volume slider etc..) will be implemented.
#2: Bugs bugs and bugs! We have removed a lot, but there seems to be more.
#3: Diagnostics. Remoteless will do a full system check, and help you with installing. Its sometimes really hard to know if SIMBL is running etc, so you will get much better feedback and also it will for example install the plugin for you.

The beta 2 will be about fully sort out all those quirks like long setup times. After that, a beta 3 focusing on support for older mac OS versions and older machines will be released.

Thanks again for all your feedback, and thanks for helping us with getting remoteless to the mac (where it really belongs :-) ).

Just to let you know guys (and galls); We are working hard to get the next beta out, but we got some unexpected problems. Leopard and Tiger behaves pretty differently from 10.6, so even if the 10.6 is getting much better, we need to fix a lot of 10.4 and 10.5 issues.

We have simplified the install / diagnostics process much, and most stuff is starting to work, so thanks for your patience, and hopefully you will have you beta 2 in not to long!

Album art and the manual setup process works great for me on Snow Leopard!

Really looking forward to the release :)

BTW, I usually have an iPod Touch running Spotify on iOS4.0 docked to my stereo. It would be great to be able to remote control this using my iPhone. But I guess that really depends on support in the Spotify client? At least the headset- and Apple Remote-control works with Spotify on iOS4!

Keep up the good work, guys!

We are currently investigating why remoteless works great on 10.6, and not so great on 10.5. If we find major differences, we release the beta 2 for 10.6 only in a short while. If not, we use a little longer to release a 10.6 & 10.5 version.
